Celebrating Summer and Family

(Two Lilies!)

Hi all, Lily the Corgi here, hoping your holiday weekend was wonderful!  Like all corgis, I love a good party and holidays are often times when parties break out.  On Friday, the 4th of July, my mama and daddy had a party and a whole bunch of our family and friends came by to visit, eat, and play.  We had a great time and everyone celebrated safely.   You might not think a patriotic holiday would be of much interest to dogs, but you'd be wrong.  My canine siblings and I love the 4th of July!   Let me tell you a bit about our day...

Parties at our house are always filled with kids.  I love kids; they all appreciate my compact size and my short legs.  Kids like to pet me and scratch my ears and I am happy to let them do so!  My human cousin Kyle is one of my favorite petters--he gives great scratching.  Even when the other kids are playing, Kyle will stay by my side to give me attention.
(Cousin Kyle is a great petter!)

Our baby cousin Cohen decided he would enjoy a nice snack of yard dirt for his holiday dining pleasure; he offered to share with my grouchy husky brother Claude.  Even though he is quite grouchy, I guess even Claude has a soft side for our youngest family member.
(Claude and baby Cohen enjoy some dirt together.)

The kids all enjoyed splashing in the wading pool.  Technically, the wading pool belongs to my beagle sister Lucy, but she was willing to share with the kids.  They splashed and squirted water and had a great time; Lucy hung out in the house to get some extra attention.
(Lucy is such an attention hound; here she's spread out so she can lie on both mama and Uncle Scott at the same time.  She has attention-getting down to an art form!)

Our humans enjoy playing a game they call "cornhole."  Unfortunately, they play it in the front yard where dogs aren't allowed so we dogs don't get to join in.  I can assure you, my beagle mix sister Lucy would be delighted to play along; she loves to carry small items, like the bean bags for the game.  Hmmm, maybe that's why the humans don't want us out there with them.
(Lucy and I enjoy watching a game of cornhole.)

Probably my favorite part of any gathering is getting to spend time with my namesake, Lily the human.  She was named after me because I'm so sweet and beautiful, so Lily the human and I share a strong bond.  Lily the human is pretty cute; she doesn't call me Lily--when she talks about me she points and says "me."
(Not every dog has a small child named for her; here's my namesake Lily the human.)

And of course, no gathering is complete without discussing my neurotic sister Sadie Mae.  Sadie was a feral puppy and wasn't properly socialized to deal with humans, so even though she is now a mature woman, she still doesn't care much for visitors.  But Sadie tries hard and has gotten more bold over the years.  She no longer hides in the closet when people come to visit; sometimes she even lets someone pet her.
(We still call her "fraidy Sadie" but as you can see here, Sadie is at least willing to stay in the same room with visitors.  To be honest, though, she does tend to hide behind daddy.)

At this great party, we had some cheese, egg salad and sandwich meat.  There were also cupcakes and the kids snacked on marshmallows.  Needless to say, we dogs managed to get a sample of each of these food products...another reason why we like it when the children come to see us--the food is closer to the floor!!

At dark time, our humans left to go watch fireworks at the river.  My canine siblings and I don't care for fireworks, so we were happy to stay home where it was quiet and safe.  When the humans got back to the house, we found out that some of the family members were spending the night with us--so we even had kids in sleeping bags to sleep with!  It was a wonderful holiday!

I hope you all enjoyed your celebration as much as we did.  Having a family is one of the greatest things any dog can experience and I'm so blessed to be able to spend time with all these humans who love me!

Take care of yourselves and keep enjoying this glorious summer!
Til next time,

Lily the Corgi

(A yard full of playmates for us!  I love family!)
